Lauren McShane recently used her volunteer day to support the Canal and River Trust, the UK’s largest canal charity, by joining their Towpath Team Volunteer programme.

As part of a small volunteer group, Lauren spent several hours last Friday helping to care for the canals and surrounding areas near Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs. The team focused on clearing rubbish, leaves, and debris from a small park, footpaths, and a set of stairs near the water.

Lauren found the experience particularly rewarding, enjoying the visible transformation of the spaces she helped clean. Volunteers were also treated to tea and biscuits during their shift, adding a social element to the day’s work.

She recommends the Canal and River Trust to anyone looking for a physically engaging, outdoor volunteering opportunity that makes a tangible difference to the environment and local community.
