The Monaghans Healthcare team will be sharing their specialist expertise with appointed main contractor Graham Construction on the development of a new £45 million eye hospital for NHS Lothian to replace the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh city centre which dates from the 1960s.

The new development will be another cutting-edge addition to the collaborative environment of the Edinburgh BioQuarter campus which brings together industry, academia, and the NHS and is already home to esteemed institutions including NHS Lothian’s Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and the University of Edinburgh’s medical teaching school.

The new hospital will be at the forefront of ophthalmology services, providing a quality eye care service to approximately 84,000 outpatients per year and carrying out up to 12,000 operations per annum by 2030. The Monaghans Healthcare team have been appointed by Graham Construction to provide healthcare planning support up to Stage 2 of the design process, providing expert clinical guidance to the team to facilitate the delivery of an outline business case for the project.

Jacquie Campbell, NHS Lothian Chief Officer, Acute Hospital Services, said:

“I am very excited about the developments being made for the new eye hospital, and I speak for the rest of the project team when I say, we are delighted with the…successful appointments so far.”
